Your First Hair System: What to Expect From Start to Finish

Most men who get to this page have already made up their mind. They’re not still deciding whether a hair system is right for them. They want to know what actually happens — step by step, no vague reassurances, no surprises on the day.

This is that page.

Before You Book — One Thing to Do First

If you have any hair left on the sides of your head, let it grow out before your appointment.

A level 1.5 on the sides — roughly two to three weeks of growth — gives your specialist enough natural hair to blend the unit into. It makes the result look significantly more natural, particularly around the edges where the unit meets your scalp.

If you’re completely bald on the sides, that’s not a dealbreaker. Your specialist will work with what you have. But if you can grow a little out, do it. It takes a few weeks and it’s worth it.

That’s the only preparation required.

How the Process Works — The Full Sequence

A lot of men assume they’ll need to make two trips — one for a consultation in person, then another for the actual service. That’s not how it works. You make one trip. Here’s the full sequence before that happens.

Step 1 — Browse and Find a Specialist

Start at the Aceman Weave Units directory. Browse specialists by city, look at their work, read what other clients have said. There’s no charge to browse and no commitment required at this stage.

Aceman Weave Units has vetted specialists across Dallas, Houston, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Charlotte, and other major US cities. Over 13,000 men have used the platform to find a specialist.

When you’re ready, select a specialist and register your interest.

Step 2 — Initial Call With Aceman

Before you speak to any specialist, Aceman has an initial call with you. This call covers your situation — your hair loss, what you’re looking for, your budget, and whether a hair system is the right fit. It’s straightforward and private. Nothing is shared beyond what’s needed to match you with the right specialist.

This call also protects your time. By the time a specialist speaks to you, Aceman has already confirmed you’re a good fit. No wasted conversations, no awkward mismatches.

Step 3 — Service Deposit

Once you’re ready to move forward, you pay a service deposit to Aceman. This confirms your booking and covers part of the cost of ordering your hair unit. The deposit is refundable until you confirm your unit selection. Once the unit is ordered, it becomes non-refundable.

Your specialist will not spend any time preparing your order until this step is complete.

Step 4 — Phone Consultation With Your Specialist

This is where the detail work happens — and it happens over the phone, not in person.

Your specialist will ask about your preferred style, hair texture, density, colour, and hairline shape. They’ll use this to source the right unit for you. If you have photos of how your hair used to look, or styles you like, have those ready. The more specific you can be, the better the match.

This call typically takes 20 to 40 minutes. By the end of it, your specialist knows exactly what to order.

Step 5 — Unit Ordered

Once you’ve confirmed the details and approved the unit selection, your specialist places the order. This is the point at which the deposit becomes non-refundable.

Your service date is set. Most men are booked within a few weeks of this point depending on the specialist’s availability and unit delivery time.

Step 6 — Your Service Day (Your One Trip In)

This is the day you come in. First appointments typically run 2 to 4 hours and cover everything in a single visit:

  • Scalp preparation
  • Unit fitting and adhesion using medical-grade adhesive
  • Cutting and blending into your natural hair
  • Styling

You walk out the same day with a full head of styled hair. No second visit required.

You pay the remaining balance directly to your specialist on the day of service.

What to Expect on the Day

It takes time. Block out at least 3 hours for your first appointment. Don’t schedule anything immediately after. The specialist will take the time needed to get the result right — rushing this step is how results go wrong.

It doesn’t hurt. The adhesive is medical-grade and skin-friendly. The process is painless. You’ll feel pressure during fitting but nothing uncomfortable.

Your specialist will check it in different lighting before you leave. A good specialist won’t send you out the door until they’re satisfied the unit looks right in natural light, indoor light, and from multiple angles. If yours doesn’t do this, ask them to.

You might need a day to get used to it. The unit will feel different on your scalp for the first day or two. That’s normal. It settles.

The Lifespan Question — Clarified

When people say a hair system lasts 3 to 6 months, they mean the hairpiece itself — the unit — has a lifespan of 3 to 6 months before it needs replacing.

They do not mean it stays on your head continuously for 3 to 6 months without coming off.

In between, the unit comes off every 4 to 8 weeks for a maintenance visit. Your natural hair grows underneath and needs to be maintained. The unit is cleaned, the bond is refreshed, and it goes back on. This is normal and expected — it’s part of how the system works.

So the realistic picture is:

  • Every 4 to 8 weeks: Maintenance visit — unit comes off, hair underneath maintained, bond refreshed, unit reattached
  • Every 3 to 6 months: New unit required — the hairpiece itself wears out and gets replaced

Both are ongoing costs to budget for. The hair system cost guide covers what each of those costs in detail.

After Your First Appointment

The first few weeks The bond is at its strongest immediately after installation. You can shower, sleep, and go about your normal life. Avoid prolonged water exposure and excessive sweating in the first 48 hours while the adhesive fully sets.

Exercise and physical activity You can work out. Pat down heavy sweat when you can and avoid tight hats that pull at the edges. The unit is designed for daily life, not for sitting still.

What’s normal Some slight lifting at the very edges toward the end of your maintenance window is normal — that’s the adhesive reaching the end of its lifespan, not the unit failing. It’s a signal your maintenance visit is due, not a problem.

What isn’t normal Significant lifting in the first two weeks, visible seams in normal lighting, or hair that doesn’t match your natural texture — these are worth raising with your specialist. A good installation shouldn’t produce any of these.

Your First Maintenance Visit

Book your first maintenance visit before you leave your service appointment. Don’t wait until you need it — specialists book up and leaving it too long creates problems with the bond.

Most men come back every 5 to 6 weeks for the first few visits while they’re getting used to the schedule. Your specialist will advise what works best for your hair type and lifestyle.

The hair system maintenance guide covers what happens at each visit and how to look after the unit between appointments.

Common First-Timer Questions

Do I need to come in twice — once for a consultation and once for the service? No. The specialist consultation happens over the phone before your service date. You make one trip in — on the day of your service — and leave with a full head of styled hair the same day.

What if I don’t have much hair on the sides? Let whatever you have grow out for two to three weeks before your appointment if you can. It helps with blending. If you’re completely bald on the sides your specialist will work with what’s there — it’s not a dealbreaker, it just affects the blending options available.

How long will I be there? Block out 3 to 4 hours for your first appointment. Some take less. Don’t plan anything immediately after.

Can I bring someone with me? Yes. Some men bring a friend or partner. Most come alone. Either is fine — the process is private and your specialist is used to both.

What do I tell people? That’s entirely up to you. Most men don’t say anything. The result looks like hair. People treat it like hair. There’s nothing to explain unless you want to explain it.

What if I don’t like it? Talk to your specialist before you leave. They can adjust the cut, the styling, and in some cases the unit itself. Don’t walk out unsatisfied — the appointment isn’t over until you’re happy with what you’re looking at.

If you’re ready to find a specialist and start the process, the directory is there. Browse by city, see the work, read the reviews. No deposit required to look around.
